What is Server Virtualisation? 

In it's simplest form, virtualisation is the process of taking a physical server and using to run multiple operating systems.

Virtualisation makes it possible to achieve significantly higher resource utilisation by sharing the physical server and moving away from the old model of “one application to one server”. Example:  in the past a typical office may have had one server for file and print sharing, one for email and one for their accounts package.  These three servers could now be hosted on the one physical server and still keep them completely separate from each other.

With virtualisation, you can reduce the number of servers and related IT hardware in the server room. This leads to reductions in space requirements, power and cooling requirements. This results in significantly lower running costs.

Eliminate planned downtime and recover quickly from unplanned outages with the ability to securely back up and migrate entire virtual environments with no interruption in service. Virtual machines are completely isolated from the physical server machine and other virtual machines. If a virtual machine crashes, all others are unaffected.
